THE ECONOMIC IMPACT OF STREETCAR IN SAN ANTONIO
|
In 2009, VIA Metropolitan transit initiated an Inner-City Rail
Streetcar Downtown Circulator Study to determine the feasibility of streetcar in
San Antonio, recommend a comprehensive streetcar system vision, followed by an implementation
plan for a starter project. In 2010, VIA followed the Feasibility Study with a more
in-depth Economic Impact Analysis to analyze potential of proposed streetcar routes
to stimulate infill development and capture increases in property value. This economic
impact analysis has been prepared in advance of a more formalized Alternatives Analysis
that will serve as the next step in VIA’s high-capacity transit planning and decision-making
process.
While this study analyzes the potential economic impact of varied proposed north-south
and east-west route possibilities, no recommendation has been made or adopted with
respect to determination of routes or related projects. The observations and conclusions
drawn from this exercise are intended to be a springboard for further project planning,
corridor refinement, and selection of route and service, in conjunction with the
Alternatives Analysis slated to get underway in 2011.
