Bus Rapid Transit
VIA’s first Bus Rapid Transit project
along Fredericksburg Road between the Medical Center and downtown is well under
way and is scheduled to start service in late 2012. Also scheduled to open in conjunction
with the service are the Medical Center Transit Center and the Westside Multimodal
Center.
Windtricity Partnership
VIA announced an agreement with
CPS Energy to become the first public agency in San Antonio to get 100 percent of
its power from Windtricity. Removing approximately 7,180 metric tons of carbon dioxide
from the atmosphere.
New Modern Transit Facilities
VIA opened a new transit center downtown and has another facility under construction
near North Star Mall scheduled for completion by January 2010. The North Star facility
will have a large open waiting area, passenger information, a customer service office,
vending machines, and restrooms. The transit center is a result of a partnership
by VIA, the Texas Department of Transportation, and the City of San Antonio.
New Environmentally-Friendly Vehicles
As part of a $31.2
million federal stimulus grant from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA),
VIA will purchase 26 hybrid electric buses, 4 compressed natural gas (CNG) buses
and one electric powered bus to test propulsion alternatives promoting sustainable
transit.
Embracing Technology
VIA has embraced technology to bring real time “Next Bus” information to our customers
at some stops and has partnered with Google to provide improved online bus trip
planning.
New Leadership
VIA successfully recruited a new President/C.E.O.
with the experience, vision and enthusiasm to take VIA and our service to a new
level.
